English Programme- Basic Certificate in English (levels 1 and 2)

Overview of the programme
The English programme at WOI is an innovative full time English Language course that can be taken as a standalone course, pre-sessional (to act as a foundation to study) or concurrent to main courses.

An initial assessment undertaken by English teachers will determine which level is appropriate and the teaching approach is communicative with a focus on the four skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing). Classes are kept to a maximum size of 20 in order to obtain maximum learner/teacher involvement. Activities are adapted to different learning styles and the resources vary accordingly. Teachers use a rich variety of sources, self designed materials, interactive whiteboards, audiotapes, audio-visual tapes, computers, course books and DVDs. Direct Teaching time will be between 16 and 20 hours per week.

Course content

  1. Writing academic essays, reports and articles: including title analysis, research, planning, organising information, structuring writing, drafting, style conventions, paragraph norms, using facts, opinions or arguments and frameworks for different essay models.
  2. Giving presentations: presentation techniques, planning, organisation, dealing with data, visuals, signalling, body language and rapport.
  3. Reading for Academic English: reading for gist, main ideas and detail, extracting data, recognising discourse markers, discourse analysis, predicting organisation, guessing meaning, focusing on paragraphs and their headings, speed reading and note-taking.
  4. Listening in an academic context: understanding how lectures/talks are structured, note-taking, prediction, summarising and filtering information.
  5. Preparing for college: Independent study and learning, knowing what is expected from you, skills and personal development.


By the end of the course Students  will have the opportunity to sit the IELTS test. Both teachers and Students will be aware of future learning needs, academic strengths and weaknesses.

Entry Requirements
UK/EU students: a minimum of an entry level 3 English qualification or assessed proficiency (following literacy level: assessment as part of initial needs analysis and induction.
International students: IELTS 5.0 (or equivalent/proficiency)

Course Fee and Duration
Duration: 3 Months to one academic year which will be assessed on application
UK Students Fees: £400 (or funding may be available); Overseas Students Fees: £600 per term
